The Nutcracker ballet to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, edited by People's Artist of Russia Nikolai Tsiskaridze, is on stage at the Alexandrinsky Theatre.
The classical libretto by Marius Petipa is based on the short story by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, translated by Alexandre Dumas. Modest, Tchaikovsky's brother, and Ivan Alexandrovich Vsevolozhsky also participated in the creation of the first version of the ballet. Staged in St. Petersburg in 1892, the ballet made a deep impression on the public and received a lot of positive reviews from critics of the time. Gradually, many versions of this production appeared.
